A love letter to the planet - Dynamic Planet Community Screening

Freda Wells

What content are we choosing to curate in our lives? This documentary screening bought 70 people together on a chilly Wellington evening, to share ideas and cross-disciplinary views on climate, society, and our shared future.

"With restoration of the land, comes restoration of the people."

Goodlife Collective proudly organised and hosted this screening of 'Earth', an episode from the docu-series Dynamic Planet. Executive produced by talented filmmaker and climate comms expert Martha Jeffries, Dynamic Planet was filmed over 3 years and 7 continents, and takes viewers on an incredible journey to hear stories from the people and animals living and working on the front line of climate change. The 4 episodes: Earth, Water, Fire & Ice, are Martha's award-winning, 'love-letter to the planet', and capture how science, nature, and traditional knowledge can prepare us for the future.

The Black Sparrow bar adjacent to the cinema filled quickly as movie-goers arrived after work, allowing time to connect, chat and imbibe. The 70-seater cinema packed out with people who care about our shared future.

It was special to be able to carve a few 'creating space' moments into the tightly-scheduled evening (a school night after all!)Β and the evening began with a brief guided medidation from Goodlife Collective Founder, Freda Wells (also a yoga teacher and Somatic Therapist in training.)Β The power of co-regulation to heal, feels like one of our collective forgotten super powers.

Special thanks to moderator-extraordinaire and climate expert Pip Wheaton, who brilliantly curated the panel discussion and Q&A. Thank you panelists for your time and wisdom - uplifting our minds and hearts.

TAKEAWAYS

‍Lucy Kebbell >> it takes courage to show up to a screening on climate, in a world where avoidance and distraction are so easy. Let's be intentional - and brave - with how we curate our information diet.

‍Pip Wheaton >> asked the panel how they handle the cognitive dissonance in this work, and I cheekily turned the question on her (sorry Pip!)She credited the sustaining power of relationships, and the inspiring people she meets in this work that keep her going. A reminder that in those unsettling steps toward living our values, we *find the others*.

>> Blissilience - the resilience-building power of bliss! (I'm sure psychoneuroimmunology provides ample evidence for this.) The effects of savouring the small things - sunny days, your childs laughter, moments of shared joy - are not small.

‍Cathrine Dyer PhD: >> 80% of people believe we need to change the system, but also believe most others don't agree (yes read again!) So start to notice and check our assumptions and perceptions.

>> Transitioning to a climate-friendly system isn't a case of a magic-bullet, persuasion and marketing - it's relational and social.

‍Kaeden Watts: >> 500 million-ish indigenous people care for 80% of earth's biodiverisity - let's listen their wisdom.

>> be ok to fail - it's how we learn and find solutions - rinse, repeat.

‍Martha Jeffries >> we're all deeply connected - land, plants, animals, humans. A truth many indigenous cultures have carried for 1,000s of years. This has been forgotten in last few centuries with runaway capitalist growth.

>> Martha's three-part change theory:
1 - make climate action aspirational & cool! (She def does this)
2 - process the feelings (acknowledge & redirect the complex emotions the climate crisis evokes)
3 - prep the soil & plant the seeds - every action counts 🌱 πŸ’š

Thank you to Thomas Nash (GWRC) and Lucy Kebbell for opening the event.

Thank you to our generous sponsors who made this event possible!
