Letting Your Soul Speak

Lorna Clansey

Now, more than ever, it is so important for us to live from our Soul.

The world around us is changing at a rate that it is hard for our rational mind to comprehend.

There is so much uncertainty, so much loss, so much fear. But there is also a rising realisation

that we are all interconnected. More people than ever are starting to re-evaluate, re-think,

re-educate.

‍

This too can be overwhelming, but a good place to begin is getting to know your Soul.

At our deepest level, there is a knowing, a collective wisdom, but it is rarely felt or experienced as

it is hidden behind Ego.

‍

For almost all of us, our Ego forms the strongest part of our identity. It has a loud and clear voice

that influences most of our thoughts and beliefs. It’s role is to keep us safe, but it does this

through working from a place of fear and scarcity.

‍

So, that voice that says

It’s too risky’

‘People like you don’t achieve those things’

‘Better to stick with what you’re doing’

‘Don’t dream too big’

‍

..well that is your Ego.

‍

A journaling exercise that I have found to be so useful is to get to know your own Ego, almost as

if it is a separate individual by giving them a character - even a name!

They can be male or female, old or young. Really feel into what that person would be like, what

they would wear, their tone of voice.

What do they fear? How are they trying to protect you? What do they say?

It may not be easy to do this, but stick with it. Your Ego can be a bit slippery and elusive when

you focus all your attention on finding it.

‍

Then think about something that you want to do but feel uncertain about and allow this character,

your Ego, to have its say by writing in a journal or notebook. Write as if it is a letter from your Ego

to you.

Dear…

You have always had these dreams, but you’ve never done anything about them. You don’t have

the staying power, etc etc.

Let all of your doubts, fears, concerns and worries flow through and note them all down. Keep

writing until you feel you’ve exhausted everything.

‍

When we try to deny/block the Ego,we have a hard time to move through and around it, but now

that you have allowed it to have its say, you can reach into your Soul.

‍

The voice of our Soul is quieter and more gentle, but where the Ego speaks from fear, the soul

speaks from expansive love. It knows there is abundance and possibility.

You can continue the exercise, by asking your Soul to speak to you.

What do I need to do next?

What is my deepest wish?

How can I best serve?

‍

Drop your awareness down out of your head and into your heart or solar plexus area. You may

even want to place your hand there. Feel the answers arise from your body and know them to be

your truth. Allow yourself to be completely uncensored. What whispers can you decipher?

Expect single words or simple sentences - anything more is your Ego coming back in. If that

happens, simply thank your Ego and remind it that it has had its say.

Make a note or voice recording of what your Soul has to say to you. This could also be in the

form of a letter.

‍

You can use this exercise whenever you are feeling stuck, lost or fearful of what to do next. It can

bring such beautiful insights and a sense of peace as you disconnect from the noise and chatter

of the Ego.

My hope is that as we go through this change and turmoil, more of us will feel compelled to

connect with our Souls and try to live from there. And by tapping into the peace, love and

gratitude that resides at our deepest level, we will send ripples of increasing magnitude out,

raising the vibrations of our beautiful and troubled planet.

Why is poetry making such a huge come-back? I think it is because our souls need more than the shallow to absent meaning-making of mainstream media. Poems are a reminder of what we hold within us. I am honoured to feature this poem by Dr Art Nahill. How did I come to connect with Ant? It goes back to a conversation with a wonderful, wise wahine, Aphra Green. She suggested Dr Glenn Colquhoun as a potential speaker for a Goodlife event, to speak of his book, 'Holding the ACEs'. We did host that event, which you can read about elsewhere on this website. What a humbling reminder Glenn's talk was. You might even describe him as a bit of a, 'Gabor Mate of Aotearoa'. At his youth health clinic in Levin, he continuously, courageously, humbly, painfully - turns towards what so many of us want to - and have the privilege to - just turn away from. But, when we do, we all keep this world small, we perpetuate the disconnection that erodes our collective potential. He reminded us that, 'we need to stop growling each other. To stop pointing the finger of blame at other parts of the system, and turn our attention toward what we CAN do. We need to WITNESS. We can all make a difference if we choose. It opened something in the hearts of everyone there, we held space for something deeply vulnerable. It melted away performative public personas and we shared feelings, childhood stories, and felt the healing of being witnessed in those stories. Just coming together in a group, has a magical power unto itself. And we acknowledged ofcourse who was missing from that room. Which is something I'd like to address in 2026. Glenn shared with us that he was organising a 'hikoi for health' with his friend, fellow medical doctor and poet, Dr Art Nahill. And that is how I connected with Art and how his poetry came to be here.
